What is an activated carbon filter?

Activated carbon filters are based on a highly porous carbon called activated carbon. The structure of activated carbon can be imagined as a sponge in which the pores have different sizes and are interconnected. This structure results in an immense inner surface area. To illustrate, four grams of activated carbon have a surface area equivalent to the size of a football pitch.
The function of activated carbon is based on the adsorption of particles and gases on the one hand, and on the catalytic ability to break down certain substances on the other. During adsorption, carbon and pollutant molecules stick together due to binding forces. The large surface area is an advantage here in order to bind as many pollutants as possible. At the same time, activated carbon acts as a catalyser and can help to break down ozone, for example.
Activated carbon filters are used in air purifiers and sometimes also dehumidifiers to purify the air. Activated carbon filters can also be found in our ecoQ CleanAir air purifiers and our ecoQ DryAir Energy Saver (Complete) 20L/ 25L dehumidifiers.
